NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday accused the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government of “aiding infiltration” and said the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) “next big target” is to form government in the 2026 Bengal assembly elections.

“I have come to tell the youth of Bengal that if you want to stop the illegal infiltration of foreigners in this country, then the only way is to form BJP government in 2026 in Bengal,” Amit Shah said while addressing the membership drive in Kolkata. “State-sponsored infiltration in Bengal has to be stopped,” he further said, according to news agency PTI.

Shah also hit out at the Mamata government over the RG Kar rape-murder incident that took place on August 9. When a trainee doctor was raped before she was killed, trigging nationwide protests demanding the security of women at workplaces.

Incidents of Sandeshkhali, RG Kar prove that our mothers and sisters are not safe in Bengal”, Amit Shah said. The Union minister also took a dig at Rahul Gandhi in the backdrop of the Congress party being upbeat about this year’s Lok Sabha performance. He said those who win take the PM oath and not sit in the chair of opposition.

“Rahul Gandhi said in Parliament that they defeated us in the Lok Sabha elections. I don’t understand why his allies don’t explain it to him that those who lose sit in the chair of opposition and who wins, takes the oath as the PM,” Amit Shah said.

BJP’s top strategist said that after Lok Sabha results, Mamata Banerjee thinks the saffron party has weakened. He said his aim was to make West Bengal a BJP bastion. He also said that his party will come to power in 2026 by two-third majority. “Mamata Didi should not think that we are sitting idle as we had got a few seats in Bengal.”
