There is some confusion over the actual date on which Diwali 2024 will be celebrated in the country. While some are of the view that it falls on October 31 this year, some are of the view that Lakshmi Puja will be performed on November 1.

To elevate the confusion and give clarity, here’s a look at Drik Panchang and astrologers have to say, according to News18.

As per Drik Panchang, Diwali is set to be celebrated on Thursday (October 31). Lakshmi Puja will also take place on the same day, as the Amavasya moon will be visible on that evening of October 31.

Diwali is one of India’s most cherished festivals in is celebrated with extreme fanfare across the nation. Traditionally, it falls on the Amavasya (new moon) of the Kartik month.

There is uncertainty over Diwali 2024 as Amavasya Tithi, which this year spans both October 31 and November 1. Drik Panchang confirms that the festival will be observed on October 31. As the Amavasya moon is expected to be visible that evening, Lakshmi Puja is scheduled for October 31 as well.

Many institutions, including schools and banks, are planning to recognise holidays on both October 31 and November 1.

Significance of Diwali

However, astrologer Vinod Soni Pauddar from Bhopal told News18 that the Amavasya Tithi begins at 2.40 pm on October 31 and lasts until the morning of November 1. He stressed the importance of conducting Diwali Puja on October 31. He also noted that celebrations on November 1 are considered inauspicious according to Shastra Samvat.

Astrologer Pandit Nandkishore Mudgal from Devghar shared similar views. He highlighted that Diwali traditionally celebrates Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya, a moment marked by the lighting of lamps.

Pandit Kalki Ram also mentioned that the Diwali festivities could validly extend over both dates. But he stressed that performing Lakshmi Puja on the night of October 31 is essential for achieving the best results.

Meanwhile, this year’s Deepotsav festival in Ayodhya promises to be spectacular. In line with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision, Ayodhya will host its first drone show, featuring 500 drones that will illuminate the night sky.

The 15-minute aerial display will take place over Saryu Ghat and Ram Ki Paadi. It will showcase images of Lord Ram, Laxman, and Hanuman in heroic poses. The drones will also recreate key scenes, including Ravana’s defeat, the Pushpak Vimana, and notable figures like Valmiki and Tulsidas, creating a captivating spectacle in the skies of Ayodhya. This year’s Deepotsav aims to set a new world record by lighting over 2.5 million lamps.

When is Mahurat Trading for Diwali 2024?

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) have announced that the special one-hour ‘Muhurat Trading’ session will occur on Friday, November 1, 2024. The session will mark the beginning of Samvat 2081 and will coincide with Diwali celebrations.
